What is labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty is the surgical procedure which reduces the size of the labia minora (inner lips). Labia minora are the skin folds that surround vaginal orifice. Some patients may get disturbed by the stretching and twisting of excess skin, especially during exercise and sexual activity. The asymmetry or big and loose appearance of the labia minora may also be a cosmetic concern for some patients.

There is a wide range of labia and there is no ideal labial size or shape. Everybody’s labia is unique and surgery is only necessary when a patient is not comfortable with the size and shape of the labia minora.

Why would someone get a labiaplasty?

• To reduce the size of the labia minora so that they don’t protrude beyond the edges of the labia majora.
• Some patients may have recurrent infections because it is more difficult to keep the area clean with excess tissue.
• To correct the asymmetry of labia minora when one is longer or of a different shape.
• To improve self confidence about the look of external genitelia, especially during sexual activity.

Who needs labiaplasty?

People may need labiaplasty for physical, esthetic and emotional reasons.Physically labia may stretch during exercise and sexual activity leading to pain.Some patients may not be happy with the look of their vulva.

What causes a labium to be oversized?

Puberty, menopause, pregnancy and chilbirth, weight gain and genetic reasons may cause the labia to be oversized and saggy.

What is the minimum age for labiaplasty?

Usually the minimum age for labiaplasty should be 18. But if there are problems related to daily function and activity in a child, labiaplasty may be indicated.

How is labiaplasty performed?

There are different techniques for a labiaplasty procedure.Mainly there are two types of surgical techniques:

• Edge resection(trimming)
• Wedge resection

Other surgeries may be concommitantly applied with a labiaplasty such as clitoral hood reduction, vaginoplasty, monsplasty, hymenoplasty or labial puff.

Is anesthesia necessary for labiaplasty?

You may have surgery under local anesthesia accompanied by sedation or under general anesthesia.

What preparations are necessary before labiaplasty?

Once you decide to have surgery in our clinic,you can book your ticket and share it with us so that your surgical appointment will be fixed.

If you are using any blood thinner medications such as aspirin, coumadin or heparin or supplements, you need to stop taking them before surgery.

If you smoke, you will be asked to stop smoking before surgery.

If you have any chronic health conditions, such as thyroid disease, diabetes, hypertension etc, consultations to regulate your condition may be necessary before surgery.

The night before surgery, you will be asked toı stop eating and drinking after 12.00 pm.

What happens on the day of surgery?

You will be taken from your hotel in the morning after an overnight fasting and brought to the clinic or hospital. You will have a face to face consultation with your surgeon and asked to sign an informed consent form.

Then you will be taken to the operation room, where an intravenous line will be placed in your arm by an anesthesiologist. You will be given medications to make you sleep (sedation) through the iv line and local anesthesia will be applied by your surgeon after cleaning the surgical area. Then your surgeon will make drawings on the labia and finish the procedure with the most appropriate technique tailored for your needs.

Self dissolving sutures will be used to close the incisions. After you recover from sedation,you will be taken to another room to have some rest where you can eat and drink. Ice packs will be applied to the wound in an on and off manner to decrease swelling, bruising and pain.

You will be asked to walk in the clinic and when you feel well enough to go back to your hotel, our assistants will drive you back and accompany you to your room. You will be asked to apply ice packs on your wound during the first few days after surgery.

How long does labiaplasty take?

The labiaplasty procedure usually takes around 40 minutes and it is usually an outpatient procedure.

Do the sutures need to be removed after labiaplasty?

The sutures used during a labiaplasty procedure are self dissolving and do not need to be removed.

Does labiaplasty heal with much scar formation?

Labiaplasty heals with almost no scar formation in most patients, although very rare skin types may lead to excessive scar formation.

What are the risks and complications of labiaplasty?

Just like every other surgical procedure, labiaplasty may also be accompanied by certain complications such as:

• Infection
• Bleeding
• Wound dehisence (breakdown)
• Hematoma formation(bruising)
• Removing too much or too little tissue
• Scarring

When should you call your surgeon after labiaplasty?

You should call your surgeon if you see the following changes after a labiaplasty procedure.

• Foul smelling discharge
• Excessive bleeding with clots
• Excessive swelling or worsening pain
• Fever
• Opening of the wound

Is labiaplasty painful?

It is normal to have some swelling, discomfort and pain after a labiaplasty procedure, especially during the first few days. You will be prescribed pain killer medications after surgery. Applying icepacks on the wound on a 20 minutes on-20 minutes off schedule is also helpful for pain and swelling relief. Wearing loose clothes and having a lot of rest during the first week after surgery is also recommended for easier healing and less pain.

Is there much bleeding after labiaplasty?

It is normal to have minor bleeding after a labiaplasty procedure around one week.

Is there loss of sensation after labiaplasty?

There may be a transient loss of sensation after labiaplasty during the healing period but it is not permanent. After healing totally, labial sensation will be totally normal.

Does labiaplasty increase sexual pleasure?

Women may have more self esteem about their external genitelia after a labiaplasty procedure which may contribute to higher sexual pleasure. In addition, when clitoral hood reduction is added to a labiaplasty procedure, it enhances clitoral stimulation and arousal contributing to higher sexual pleasure.

Can you still get wet after labiaplasty?

Arousal and lubrication is not adversely affected by a labiaplasty procedure and you can still get wet during sexual arousal.

Are labiaplasty results permanent?

Labiaplasty results are permanant unless there are complications or future child births.

How do you keep the area clean after labiaplasty?

You can take a shower just by spraying water from the front to the back of the vulva, without using any soap or rubbing the surgical area. You should always keep the area dry and clean.

What are the recommendations after labiaplasty?

• Have plenty of rest especially during the first week after surgery
• Do not smoke before and after surgery
• Drink plenty of water and consume more fiber in your diet to avoid constipation, in case you are constipated, you will be prescribed stool softeners.
• Keep your wound dry and clean by showering not rubbing
• Wear loose underwear and clothes
• Stop waxing and epilation for 6 weeks
• Stop exercising, swimming, bathing in the tub for 6 weeks.
• Stay away from sexual activity for 6 weeks
• Avoid straining for 6 weeks.

When can you have sex after labiaplasty?

Labiaplasty healing takes about 4- 6 weeks and you can have sex after your control visit unless there are any complications in 4-6 weeks after surgery.

When can you return to work after labiaplasty?

You can return to work and daily activities in a few days after a labiaplasty procedure.

When can you exercise after labiaplasty?

It is recommended that you give a break to physical exercises around 4-6 weeks after a labiaplasty procedure.

When can you travel after labiaplasty?

You can travel in a few days after a labiaplasty procedure.

When will the results of labiaplasty be at their best?

Most swelling and bruising will be gone in 6 weeks after labiaplasty.However wound healing continues for about 6 months after surgery when you can best see the final result of surgery.
